Towards a Zero Waste London!

Hello! My name is Holly, and I have been living in London for the past 4 years. With the new year coming up, I want to see what it takes to live a waste-free (or near enough) life in London. I’ve set up this blog as a way to track my tips and challenges along the way, keep myself motivated, and hopefully help others to do the same!

Why?

  1. The Environment

A report this year found that London consumes more plastic bottled water than anywhere else in England, and yet has the worst recycling rate in the UK! Climate change is one of the – if not the most – pressing issues we face today. And as a prosperous city, London can and must do better in challenging it.

  1. Health

Plastic simply isn’t very good for us! I want to find more natural, longer lasting replacements.

  1. Cost

Going zero waste has huge cost benefits. Purchasing one-off items that last years instead of disposables lead to happy pockets. I will aim to track my spending to see how this goes.

  1. Fun!

I enjoy a challenge and think this could (maybe?) be quite fun! I’m looking forward to seeing what odd things I get up to and find along the way.

Will it be hard?

I admit, I have previously tried to live a zero-waste lifestyle in London, but one way or another I have found myself using plastic again (boo!). I am all too aware of the difficulties the city poses to living a plastic free life. The hectic pace of every day life here makes packaged meal deals, disposable cutlery and coffee cups easily become daily habits. The massive size of this city also makes the idea of knowing where to start (where on earth are bulk buy shops?!) rather daunting. This blog marks a new era! Step by step I will be uncovering handy tips, tricks and key locations for making a zero-waste lifestyle in London more attainable.

So lets begin! Over the next few months I hope to do a minimum of fortnightly posts. Expect content such as zero-waste grocery shopping, Going-Out in London on a zero waste basis, and my daily packing lists etc. As a 22 year old recent graduate, I will also be covering a fair amount on living a budget zero waste London lifestyle. It is all going to be a learning experience, with me sharing my findings as I go along. There will probably be a few hiccups, but I will try my very best.

As the title implies, this blog intends to be mainly London focused, looking at the challenges and tips relating specifically to this city. However, occasionally there may be content on a few other related areas. In fact, a small disclaimer… Whilst I am now raring to explore waste free living in London, I am about to venture on an exciting 3 month trip to India. But nonetheless, I will tailor my posts during those months to London as much as possible! I’m sure there are many things I will encounter that London could learn from.

I have also recently applied to a MSc in Sustainable Urban Design which starts in September 2018. So, (if I am accepted), the future may also see me branch into topics on London and ‘The Environment’ more broadly. But all in good time… For now I am just going to try and get a grip of the basics.

Thanks for visiting and see you soon!
